Pratt hired as coach of McCormick football

McCormick has hired Paul Pratt as its new football coach, the school announced last week.

The McCormick native served as the team's offensive coordinator last season. He's served various roles within the school's athletics and around the area.

"It's a dream come true to give back to the Chiefs," Pratt said in a statement. "I've worked for this county for 27, 28 years dealing with rec, middle school and varsity programs. But it's a dream come true, and there's nothing like giving back to your community."

Pratt replaces Russ Schneider, who was relieved of his coaching duties after being arrested on DUI charges. He remains employed by the school system as a teacher.

McCormick went 4-0 in Region 1-A last season and appeared in the Class A playoffs.

Two Augusta GreenJackets have been named to the Southern Division team for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

Infielder Kelvin Beltre and left-handed pitcher Domenic Mazza were chosen for the South squad. The game will be played June 20 at Columbia's Spirit Communications Park.

Beltre, a 20-year-old Dominican, is hitting .270 with 19 extra-base hits and 20 RBI in 46 games.

Mazza, a 22-year-old from California, has a 3.93 ERA with 10 walks to 38 strikeouts in nine starts spanning 55 innings. He tossed a perfect game at Lexington on April 25, the first to cover nine innings in South Atlantic League history.

AU student signs archery scholarship

Lauren Pearson has signed a scholarship offer to compete in archery for Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga.

Pearson, a North Augusta resident and Augusta University student, will compete for the Lions in the Division II Conference Carolinas.

Pearson picked up a bow for the first time in 2011 and taught herself to shoot. She recently finished 16th in the female division in a national bowhunter competition despite never having a coach, and she has been a member of Augusta's archery club.
