Chess champ shares opportunity

Merriwether resident and defending female Scholastic State Chess champion Tori Whatley chose to provide an opportunity for another girl from South Carolina to represent the South Carolina Chess Association in the Susan Polgar Girls’ Invitation.

The teen decided to work with her father, David Whatley, as a tournament director and not to compete in the state championship. By not competing, she opened the door for a new female state champion.

“Since I’m eligible to return to the (Polgar) event on a special alumni invitation, I thought it would be great to share this wonderful experience with another girl and give our state two seats at the competition,” she said in a news release.

David Whatley was also recognized for his efforts in growing support for the game as the state scholastic coordinator.

“With the help of some amazing people, there has been a nearly 30-percent increase in participation in the last three years,” he said in the release. “More people are realizing the awesome benefits of this game.”
