Chess champ to
compete in tourneys

Five-time South Carolina female scholastic champion, Tori Whatley will participate in two chess tournaments over the next two weeks.

Tori has been invited to compete in the Border Battle. The best North Carolina and South Carolina chess players play will play against each other Saturday and Sunday in Cornelius, N.C.

Three years ago, Tori became the first girl invited to play in the tournament.

The teen will then compete in the Susan Polgar Girls Invitational in St. Louis on July 20-25. Only 52 invitations are offered each year for the competition. Tori has participated five times.

Tori is a resident of Merriwether and a rising senior at Strom Thurmond High School.
