South Carolina’s five time female scholastic champion, Tori Whatley, participated in the U.S. Chess Federation Supernationals event April 4 in Nashville, Tenn.

It was Tori’s second visit to the Supernationals event which is held every four years and more than 5,000 students in K12 participate.

The Merriwether resident, along with a few dozen other players, had the opportunity to play in a simultaneous exhibition match with former Women’s World Champion Grandmaster Alexandra Kostenuik.

In the main event, Tori received 2.5 points out of 7, which was better than her first appearance performance.

Tori is the daughter of David and Melinda Whatley and granddaughter of Annie Whatley. She is also the assistant coach of the Merriwether Mavericks Chess Club.
