(Emily Rose Bennett/Staff) Third graders participate in a Jr. Jazzercise class led by instructor Loralee Kokovich as part of a Kids Get Fit day at Mossy Creek Elementary School in North Augusta on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

Pupils laughed and tried to outdance their classmates as they participated in a Junior Jazzercise class during their activity time on Aug. 27 at Mossy Creek Elementary School.

Third-grader Xzavier Shaw stood out in the front line as he danced to the music.

“I like dancing,” said the 8-year-old, adding his favorite type of dance is break dancing.

The activity was part of an annual Kids Get Fit Day that Kokovich organizes at local elementary schools. She also instructs an afterschool program at Mossy Creek, Hammond Hill and North Augusta elementary schools.

“Jazzercise is dance exercise that anyone at any age can do,” said Kokovich, who has been a Jazzercise instructor for 25 years and has taught Junior Jazzercise for 20 years. “It’s a total body fitness program. Junior Jazzercise teaches kids that fitness can be fun.”

The activity allows participants to work out a variety of muscles and is adaptable to their skill level, she said.

Reagan Hill, 8, participated in the after-school activity last school year.

“It gets your heart moving,” she said of Junior Jazzercise.

Xzavier said that he enjoyed the activity and would like to do it more.

“It’s good exercise,” he said. “You can get loose.”
