Winners of the Americanism essay contest were recognized March 4 during the American Legion Auxiliary Jesse C. Lynch Memorial Unit 71 meeting. The essay's topic was "What freedom do I enjoy the most?" Winners for class I (third and fourth grades): Grayson Birdgers, first place, Hammond Hill Elementary; Emily Bee, second place, Mossy Creek Elementary; and Keiri MacKie, third place, Mossy Creek Elementary. Winners of class II (fifth and sixth grades) are Jaylan Tillman, first place, Paul Knox Middle; Macey Hughes, second place, Hammond Hill Elementary; and Ryan Franklin, third place, Hammond Hill. Belvedere Elementary

• The following pupils made the 100 Book Club: Sawyer Dixon, Hollymarie Guerrieri, Deacon Ledford, Gracie Green and Trevor Thompson.

• The following pupils made the principal's writing board: Katelynn Fulmer, Colten Walker, Myles Price, Austin Harrell, Tamyia McKevie and Erin Fridie.

• There is no school Friday.

 • Tuesday is the last day for the Good News Club.

Fox Creek High

• There will be a Sparkle Car Wash fundraiser for March.

• The North Augusta Artists Guild Visual Arts Scholarship is awarded to a senior considering a college degree in the arts. The deadline to apply is Friday. See Mrs. Stallings for an application.

• Tuesday is an early release day.

Hammond Hill Elementary

• The following pupils made the Double H Reading Club: Olivia Cato, Caroline Shields, Latavia Richardson, Grace McKenzie, Ryan Franklin, Carter McDiarmid and Julianna Humphries. 200 Books: Riley Hawkins. Pagemasters: Claire Crowder, Matthew Owings and Caroline Peace.

• The PASS writing test will be administered to third through fifth grades today.

• Thursday is World Down Syndrome Day. Everyone is encouraged to wear lots of socks.

• Friday is a teacher workday. There is no school for pupils.

• Tuesday is the end of the third nine weeks.

• The PASS writing test will be administered today.

• The spring book fair is Monday through March 28.

• Pupils will be released at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

• MES family reading night is Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

• There is no school March 29.

• There are a number of items in the lost and found. Unclaimed items will be donated to Goodwill during spring break.

• Spring break is April 8-12.

Merriwether Middle

• The Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club meets on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Merriwether Elementary. Memberships are $35 per year and include a regulation chess set and a T-shirt.

• Chick-fil-A biscuits are sold on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

• The school collects Box Tops and ink cartridges.

Mossy Creek Elementary

• The Chick-fil-A biscuit sale will be Thursday.

• The student council, along with the United Way, is sponsoring Be A Bunny to collect items for area seniors. Items being collected include bath supplies, toiletries, books, crossword puzzles, candy, Boost or Ensure drinks, eyeglass cases, pill boxes, nonperishable food items, first aid supplies, night lights, stamps and stationary. Items are being collected through Friday.

• There is no school Friday.

North Augusta Elementary

• ELDA testing continues through Friday.

• The PASS writing test will be administered to third through fifth grades today.

• MAP testing continues through March 28.

• The yearbook is looking for pictures from field trips, class parties and other school events. Please e-mail photos to kmomster@gmail.com and label the e-mail with the teacher’s name. The pictures must be in high resolution.

• The Looney Tunes Savings Club is open Tuesdays for deposits.

• The NAES PTO will honor former North Augusta Elementary students graduating from North Augusta High School with the NAE PTO Scholarship. Those interested in making a donation to the scholarship fund can make checks out to the NAE PTO/ Scholarship Fund and dropped in the PTO box in the school office.

• Free tutoring is available for struggling learners in second through fifth grades. To find out if your child qualifies, contact Rose Marshall in the Office of Federal Programs at (803) 641-2645.

• Yearbooks can be purchased for $15 by sending in cash or a check made payable to NAEPTO. Yearbooks can also be ordered online at Jostens.com.

• If a child leaves an item in the classroom, the item can be retrieved only until 2:45 p.m. daily.

North Augusta High

• A Jostens representative will be at the school Tuesday to take class ring orders during lunch. A $50 deposit is required to order.

• The Paul Knox Scholarship recognizes a student with outstanding achievement, intellectual ability, good character, promise of future contribution to society and established need. The deadline to apply is March 28.

• The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will award a scholarship through its Col. Charles Young High School Scholarship Essay Program. The deadline to apply is March 30.

• The Aiken County Educators Association-Retired will award a $500 scholarship to high school seniors interested in pursuing a degree in education. The deadline to apply is April 1. See your counselor for an application.

• Prom tickets will go on sale April 1. Seniors who paid their junior fees last year and juniors who paid their junior fees this year get in free. Others must pay $50. A prom date information sheet must be filled out for prom dates who do not attend North Augusta High.

• The North Augusta Cultural Arts Council will award a scholarship to a graduating senior. The student must live within Aiken County School District’s area II and demonstrate excellence in an art form. See your guidance counselor for more information. The deadline to apply is March 29.

• The Belvedere Elementary PTO will award a scholarship to a graduating senior who has a 3.0 GPA or higher, participates in school and community activities and attended Belvedere Elementary for at least three years. The deadline to apply is April 15.

• A SAT prep class will be held April 25 for the May and June SAT dates. The cost for the day-long program is $35. Register with your counselor.

• The Greely Chapter Scholarship Program awards a $1,000 scholarship. There is an essay requirement. The deadline to apply is April 30.

• The North Augusta Sertoma Scholarship Fund awards $1,000 scholarships to candidates annually on the basis of scholastic aptitude, financial need and citizenship. The deadline to apply is May 1.

• A working meeting for the North Augusta High literary journal is held every Thursday in Room 305. Bring your poems, plays, journals, essays and drawings.

• Chick-fil-A cookies will be sold for $1.25 during lunch Tuesdays and Thurs­days, and sandwiches will be sold for $4 on Fridays.

• The NJROTC canteen is open during all three lunches. Items sold include chips, cookies, crackers, candy and drinks.

• The Jacket Espresso is open during all three lunches and sells coffee, hot chocolate, fruit smoothies and iced mocha lattes.

North Augusta Middle

• There is no school Friday.

• The end of the third nine weeks is Tuesday.

• There is no school March 29.

• Pupils will be dismissed two hours early April 3.

• The student council meeting is April 4.

• The athletic banquet is April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.

• The faculty/student games are April 5.

• Spring break is April 8-12.

 • Spring pictures will be taken April 25.

• The transfer fair for rising sixth grade pupils is April 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

 • The Junk in Your Trunk sale is April 27 from 8 to 11 a.m. Spots are $10 for one spot or $15 for two spots. Vendor forms are available in the front office and on the school's Web site.

• The deadline for transfer requests to attend a different school is May 1.

 • The spring fling is May 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Misty Lakes. Tickets will be sold during the eighth grade lunch May 13, 15 and 17. The event is for North Augusta Middle eighth grade pupils only.

• The Guitar Club practices every Monday from 3:20 to 3:50 p.m.

• The Chess Club meets Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Ms. Hodges classroom.

• PTO is creating subcommittees for the 2012-13 school year. Committees include: school dances, Box Tops and Campbell’s soup labels, volunteer coordinator, eighth-grade spring fling, special events, pizza and Chick-fil-A lunch coordinator, fundraising and hospitality. Our Lady of Peace

• Pupils will be dismissed early on Monday for report card conferences.

• Pupils will be dismissed early on March 28 for Holy Thursday.

• There is no school March 29 in observance of Good Friday.

• Pupils can dress out of uniform for $1 on April 4. Proceeds will benefit Relay for Life. Guidelines in the student handbook must be followed.

Paul Knox Middle

• The school talent show is Thursday.

• Spirit rings will be delivered April 29.

• The eighth-grade dance is May 18.

• All student special permission transfer requests must be completed by May 31. Pupils already in the school do not have to reapply for special permission to attend.

• Chick-fil-A biscuits are sold in the car line from 7:30 to 8 a.m. every Friday for $3 each.

• Registration for the 2013-14 school year is Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Student messages will be delivered at 1:45 p.m. All messages must be called in by 1:30 p.m. Pupils cannot leave school early unless they are signed out by a parent, guardian or their designee. Pupils who miss at least four periods will be counted absent for the day. Pupils who have an appointment scheduled should bring an excuse, have it approved in the office, show it to the teacher at the beginning of class and leave quietly at the necessary time without disturbing class.

• Free middle school tutoring is being offered. For qualifications, call Rose Marshall in the Office of Federal Programs at (803) 641-2645.

• Lunch extras are being sold in the canteen: Mondays – canteen items; Tuesdays and Fridays – pizza slices, $2 per slice; and Thursdays – nachos and hot dogs, $2 each and drinks are $1.25 each. Cash only. Volunteers are needed to help with lunch sales from 10:53 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mondays and Fridays. Contact Sandy Zellar at stzmail@bellsouth.net if you can help.

• The PTO collects Box Tops, used ink cartridges and My Coke Rewards.

Victory Christian

• The third quarter ends today.

• Report cards will be issued Friday.

• The “I Dig Reading” contest ends Friday.

• The Stanford practice tests will be administered Monday.

• There is no school March 29.

 • Spring break is April 8-12.

• Mrs. McBride is tutoring Algebra I students Monday through Wednesday from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

• Chapel is held at 11 a.m. Thurs­days in the Victory Baptist College’s main classroom, located on the second floor of the school building.

• The yearbook needs pictures. Any student or parent who has taken pictures of school events this school year can submit their photos on CDs to Mrs. Nelson or e-mail them to library@jesusgivesmevictory.com.
