General news

• The acGATEWAY program is now accepting applications. The program, which provides instruction in visual arts, music, creative writing, drama and dance, is available to Aiken County students in grades 3-12. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and audition. Applications are due Friday. For more information, visit acps.

• The Aiken High School Class of 1977 will have its 35-year reunion Dec. 29 from 8 p.m. to midnight at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry St. SW, Aiken. Advance tickets are $35 per person; tickets will be $45 per person at the door. Belvedere Elementary

• Today is an early release day. Pupils will be released at 12:30 p.m.

• Domino’s Spirit Night is Thursday.

• The Santa Shop will be open Monday through Dec. 14.

• Yearbooks can be ordered for $23 through Dec. 31. After Dec. 31, the cost will be $25. To order a yearbook, enclose a check or cash in an envelope with the child’s name, parent’s name and teacher’s name on the outside and return it to school. Checks should be made payable to Belvedere Elementary.

• Box Tops, Campbell’s soup labels, My Coke Rewards, Tyson chicken labels, used ink cartridges and recyclable cell phones are being collected.

• Student Council is selling Chick-fil-A calendars for $6.

• Those interested in volunteering or who are currently volunteering must attend a volunteer training meeting. Contact Ms. Lee or Mrs. Johnson at (803) 442-6330 for more information.

• The Looney Tunes Bank is open from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays in the cafeteria. A deposit of $5 is required to open an account, and the bank will put in $1. Pupils receive a bankbook with deposit and withdrawal slips, a pencil and coin holder.

Fox Creek High

• Saturday school dates are: Saturday, April 20, April 27, May 4, May 11, May 18, May 25 and June 1. The cost to attend is $10. Students must arrive by 8 a.m. and be picked up at noon. One day of Saturday school will make up for one absence. Students should bring school work with them. There will be no access to lockers. Those planning to attend must sign up with Mrs. Mayson by the end of the day on the Thursday prior to the Saturday school date.

• The pre-pageant/prom fashion show will be at 5 p.m. Thursday in the commons.

• The National Honor Society and Beta Club induction ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday.

• The next board meeting is Dec. 18 in the Fox Creek conference room.

• Exams will be Dec. 18-21.

• Dec. 21 is a half-day.

• The Miss Fox Creek 2013 pageant will be held Jan. 26. The theme is Up-town Girl and the competition includes on-stage interviews, sportswear and evening gown. See Mrs. Leopard for more information.

• A free FAFSA workshop will be held Feb. 23 at Aiken Technical College from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Fox Creek teacher cadets will attend the Ron Clark Academy for Teacher Training in April at a cost of $200 per cadet. At the academy, cadets will observe master teachers in action. Anyone interested in making a donation toward the cost or paying the full cost for a cadet can contact Mrs. Mayson or Ms. Cowart.

• Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship is a one time grant of $1,000. Only one student can be nominated per school. If you are interested, give Mrs. Stallings a list of your extracurricular activities, including community involvement.

• Spartanburg Methodist College offers students who graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher a full-tuition financial aid package. Apply at www.smcsc.edu.

• The Watson-Brown Scholarship is for low income students planning to attend any four-year college. Scholarships are $3,000 or $5,000 per year. Go to www.watson-brown.org/scholarship to apply.

• Seniors should go ahead and plan college visits. Each student gets two excused days for college visits. Documentation of the visit must be turned in for it to be excused.

• Yearbooks can be ordered now. Go to www.foxcreekhighschool.org to make a purchase.

Hammond Hill Elementary

• Today is an early-release day. Pupils will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

• Hammond Hill will be on the Beta Sigma Phi Tour of Homes Friday and Saturday. Tours will be held 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

• Polar Express will be Dec. 20.

• The last day of class before winter break is Dec. 21. Classroom parties will be held on this date.

• Parents are asked to send in a new, unwrapped toy for the annual Christmas Child toy drive.

• Save can tabs and turn them in throughout the school year for the Ronald McDonald House.

• Contact Christy Cosh or Ordean Crews if you’re interested in volunteering, including chaperoning field trips, but were unable to attend a volunteer meeting.

• Orders for 2012-2013 yearbooks are now being taken. If yearbooks are ordered before Dec. 22, the cost is $22. After Dec. 22, the cost will be $26. The yearbook will be in color with a hardback cover. Checks may be made payable to HHE PTO or pay online at ybpay.lifetouch.com, code 7731513.

• Food brought to school parties or for class celebrations must be purchased commercially.

• The Looney Tunes Bank is open for deposits every Monday from 7 to 7:30 a.m.

• The HHE School Store is open Monday through Friday from 7 to 7:25 a.m. The store sells pencils, folders, notebooks, crayons and other school supplies with costs ranging from 25 cents to $1. Parents are asked to send dollar bills or coins with their child to use in the store because a lot of change is not kept on hand. Volunteers are needed to work in the school store on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. • A limited number of spirit shirts are available for $12 each. The sizes available are youth small, youth medium and youth large. Checks can be made payable to HHE.

• For a donation of $15, a new hardcover book will be placed in the library and a bookplate honoring your child or a teacher will be placed in the front of the book. Donations will be announced on the HHE Morning News Show. Forms are available in the library media center.

• Parents must provide the full birth date of a pupil when making transportation changes over the telephone. It is preferable that changes be in writing. No transportation changes will be honored after 2 p.m. On early-release days, changes must be made before noon.

• The 2012-13 Buzz Cards can be purchased for $5. The cards can be used at many local businesses throughout the year.

Merriwether Elementary

• The Looney Tunes Bank is open at 9 a.m. Wednesdays in the media center.

• The MES Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club meets on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

• The PTO Christmas Shoppe will be open through Friday. Send money and any shopping requirements with your child.

• The Chorus Holiday Concert, Santa’s Holiday Playlist, will be held Dec. 13 at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

• Dec. 21 is a half-day.

• Christmas break will be Dec. 24 through Jan. 4.

• Jan.7 is a teacher workday. There will be no school for pupils.

• The third nine weeks begin Jan. 17.

• Orders for the 2013 yearbook are being accepted. Yearbooks will be hardcover and in color. Yearbooks are being sold for $25 until Jan. 18. • Martin Luther King Holiday will be observed Jan. 21.

• MES PTO membership is $5 per family. Checks should be made payable to MES PTO.

• No changes in transportation from car to bus or bus to car will be taken over the phone. Changes should be sent to the school in writing.

• Parents can call into the homework hotline to check homework assignments. Call (803) 279-9993 and then dial the teacher’s room number when prompted.

Merriwether Middle

• Chick-fil-A chicken biscuits will be sold in the car line Tuesday from 7 a.m. until sold out.

• The Winter Dessert Concert is Tuesday.

• Mustangs on Parade will be Dec. 21 from 9 to 11 a.m.

• Dec. 21 is a half-day.

• Christmas break will be Dec. 24 through Jan. 4.

• Jan. 7 is a teacher workday. There will be no school for pupils.

Mossy Creek Elementary

• Mossy Creek is collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Toys can be placed in one of the collection boxes in the front office. All toys will go to local children in need.

• Chick-fil-A calendars are being sold for $6.50 each.

• To volunteer at the school, a volunteer/chaperone training must be attended every year. The next training dates are today at 11:45 a.m. and noon; Friday at 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.; and Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. Training will not be offered after December. North Augusta Elementary

• The Looney Tunes Savings Club is open Tuesdays for deposits.

• Fifth graders can purchase a 1/4-page ad in the yearbook for $50, a half-page for $100 and a full page for $200. Other grades can purchase business-card size ads for $25. Thank-you ads for teachers or staff are available for $25. Businesses can purchase ads at the following rates: $35, business card size; $70, 1/4-page; $140, 1/2-page; and $280 for a full page. Page sponsorships are available for $20. Parents are asked to send in photos from school events to be used in the yearbook. • If a child leaves an item in the classroom, the item can be retrieved only until 2:45 p.m. daily.

North Augusta High

• The deadline for the 2012 FBLA Pet trick Contest is Friday. To participate, go to the NAHS Pet Trick Contest page on Facebook for rules and instructions on how to upload video for the judges. Winners will be announced Dec. 13.

• ASVAB will be offered today at 8:15 a.m. in the media center. ASVAB is the required test if you are interested in the military. Those planning to take the test must sign up with their counselor or Ms. Mottel.

• NAHS Ambassador applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday. Ambassadors greet and introduce new students, invite new students to events, conduct campus tours, serve as a lunch buddy, and attend meetings and open houses. Applications are available in guidance and the main office.

• The Adopt-a-Child Christmas Project program will be held Dec. 14. First period classes are asked to purchase Christmas presents from the child’s wish list.

• The Mr. NASH event will be held Dec. 15.

• Chick-fil-A cookies will be sold for $1.25 during lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sandwiches will be sold for $4 on Fridays.

• The NJROTC canteen is open during all three lunches. Items sold include chips, cookies, crackers, candy and drinks.

• The Jacket Espresso is open during all three lunches and sells coffee, hot chocolate, fruit smoothies and iced mocha lattes.

• FCA sells pizza Tuesdays and Thursdays for $3 in the courtyard during all three lunches.

• Spanish Club membership is $10.

• Student council meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the media center. There will be no meetings in November and December.

• FCA meets every Friday in Mobile 2 at 7:45 a.m. Krispy Kreme and orange juice will be served.

• Tutoring is offered as follows: Mondays, English in Room 116, Spanish in Room 201 and French in Room 203; Tuesdays, math in Room 304 and business in the assigned teacher’s room; and Thursdays, social studies in Room 509 and science in Room 212.

• Those interesting in taking a trip to Italy and Greece in July should see Mr. Gill in Room 509. The trip includes a three-day Aegean Cruise.

North Augusta Middle

• Career Speaker Day will be held today from 8:15 to 10:10 a.m.

• The student council meeting is Thursday.

• Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting dates for the year are: Friday, Jan. 11, Feb. 1, March 8, April 5, May 3, and May 31. Community members willing to speak to the club should contact Robb Underwood at runderwood@aiken.k12.sc.us.

• The NAMS band chili cook-off will be held Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5.

• The Stand Up & Stop Bullying Club will have a meeting Monday.

• Christmas Creations will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the gym. The event will feature the show choir, strings, art department and band.

Paul Knox Middle

• MAP testing will be administered continuesthrough Dec. 19.

• Lunch extras are being sold in the canteen: Mondays- canteen items; Tuesdays and Fridays- pizza slices, $2 per slice; and Thursdays- nachos and hot dogs, $2 each and drinks are $1.25 each. Victory Christian

• Chapel is held at 11 a.m. Thurs­days in the Victory Baptist College’s main classroom, located on the second floor of the school building.
