Searching the job market is usually a full-time job itself, but a few tips make getting your resume recognized easier, and will help set you on the path to employment.
Job search
- Use as many resources as you can -- don't limit yourself to the Internet.
- Other people are your greatest resources -- brush up on your networking skills.
Resume
- Highlight your education, communication skills, work ethic, technical skills, leadership ability and analytical skills.
- Avoid having any religious, political or personal information on your resume.
- Make sure your resume is a brief summary of your work history and abilities. Keep it clean, organized and grammatically correct. Don't forget to use spell check.
Telephone interview
- During a phone interview, make sure you are in a place where you can't be interrupted and you have good reception.
- Demonstrate your communication and listening skills.
In-person interview
- Dress professionally: wear solid colors, moderate shoes, and limited accessories. A suit is preferred, but if you don't have one, it's OK to wear blouses and slacks or skirts for women, or dress pants and button-down shirts and ties for men.
- Do your research on the organization before the interview. Make sure you look at the mission, values, philosophy, major productions and current events.
- Prepare questions to ask the interviewer about the work environment and training opportunities provided for the position.
- Your handshake is the most important first impression you can make. It should say: I'm excited to be here, and I'm open to new experiences.
- During the interview, stay focused, enthusiastic, and avoid fidgeting or looking at the clock.
- Send a thank you note after the interview. Some organizations consider the failure to send a note a deal breaker. Make sure you leave a good impression.
Be honest and confident about your skills, abilities and competencies. You are your greatest marketing tool. Don't cheat yourself by not preparing for your job search and interviews.
