Lisa Williams' back surgery in her early 20s did more than strengthen her curved spine.
It gave her an opportunity to follow her dreams.
While recovering from surgery to treat scoliosis, which she'd developed after her second child was born, Williams applied for a grant to study cosmetology.
Now, 17 years later, she owns Designing Women Styles Unlimited on Belvedere-Clearwater Road.
The leap from hairdresser to business owner was a bit unexpected.
"I didn't really think that I was going to own a salon," she said.
She worked for Harold's Beauty Shop, which was located in the same building, when he decided to sell the salon eight years ago.
Williams found the financing and bought the building, spruced it up and changed the name to Designing Women Styles Unlimited, after one of her favorite television shows.
The name occasionally causes some confusion for new or potential customers.
"A lot of times people thought we were a clothing store or home interiors," she said.
Williams has six stylists and barbers, and enjoys the rapport they share.
"We're like family around here," she said. "We always help each other out."
The salon offers tanning and facial waxing in addition to hair styling.
Williams said she also enjoys her relationship with her clients, who can make her cry if they become really excited about their haircut.
"I love to see people's expressions on their face when they get a good haircut and they love it," she said.
Williams' goal is to pay off the business, which she'll do in about two years. Then she'd like to remodel the building and add a few structural enhancements like more windows.
"It still needs a lot more work to it," she said.
