Teens make soap shapes at Nancy Carson Library

Posted June 30, 2009 2:16 PM

A group of girls learned the craft of making shapes with soap from glycerin soap bars at Nancy Carson Library.

Jacqueline Phillips, 12, said she never has made soap before so she decided to give it a try at the June 23 session.

"I thought it would be interesting to see how to make it," she said. "I was expecting it to be easy, but like cool how you made it and stuff."

Jacqueline made a "rose-red bar soap and an emerald-green shell soap." The process only takes a few minutes to turn a plain bar of glycerin soap into a scented and colored shape, like a turtle or seashell.

First, a bar of soap is melted in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then, the girls had to add a few drops of fragrance and color to the melted soap and stir. Last of all, the liquid soap is poured into a mold, sprayed with alcohol, and left to cool.

Children's Library Assistant Renee Reel said alcohol is sprayed on the soap to keep bubbles from forming.

Reel said soap-making kits can be purchased at craft stores like Hobby Lobby.

Jacqueline said she plans to make soap in the future with her friends because it's fun and inexpensive.

"It was a really creative thing to do," she said. "I enjoyed it very much."
