Barbecue is almost as synonymous with the Fourth of July as fireworks. Those looking to spice up a picnic may not have to drive far to find a barbecue to suit their taste.
Below are North Augusta's barbecue joints for local Independence Day flavor.
EDMUND'S BAR-B-QUE

BEST SELLING DISH : The regular plate for $6.75; includes chipped barbecue, hash and rice, potato salad or cole slaw.
SAUCE : "We have ketchup-based sauce," said owner Phyllis Edmunds. "We make our own barbecue and our own hash."
"It's the bomb," added Mark Johnson, who also works at the restaurant. "Everybody says that when they come in."
MAURICE'S BBQ

HOURS : 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
BEST SELLING DISH : Little Joe basket for $7.24; includes chopped barbecue pork sandwich with fries, coleslaw and a hush puppy. The Little Joe ties as best seller with the Little Pig, which is $9.49; includes 7 ounces of chopped pork, coleslaw, hash and rice, two hush puppies and a roll.
SAUCE : "It is a mustard-based sauce. We use Maurice's original sauce on all the meats that we prepare called Southern Gold," said manager Roger Mote.
BBQ BARN

BEST SELLING DISH : "The ribs and the barbecue are pretty close," said manager Thomas Glover. Barbecue pork plate for $8; includes barbecue pork, two sides, bread and hush puppies. Ribs plate for $13.50; includes half-slab of ribs, two sides, bread and hush puppies.
SAUCE : "It's a vinegar-based ketchup sauce," Glover said.
SPORTSMAN'S BBQ

HOURS : 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday
Best selling dish : Regular barbecue plate for $7.75; includes barbecue, hash and rice and two sides.
SAUCE : The most popular sauce is the medium. A hot barbecue sauce is also offered. "I make all the sauces," said manager Lee Wetherington.
ANNUAL FOURTH OF JULY BAR-B-QUE

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Dine-in tickets for children ages 6-12 are $5, no carry-out. Barbecue can be purchased at $8 per pint, and hash can be purchased for $9 per quart.
ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

DISH : Barbecue plate for $7 includes barbecue, hash on rice, potato salad and bread. Barbecue or hash can be ordered for $7.50 per pound.
