NAME: Carly May

AGE: 11

GRADE: Sixth

SCHOOL: Paul Knox Middle

SPORT: Swimming

POSITION: Backstroke, butterfly and individual medley

Q: How did you get started?

A: My dad. I started at age 5 and I was good at it.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the sport?

A: Competing. The backstroke is my favorite to compete in. That's my best stroke.

Q: What's the worst thing about the sport?

A: Practicing the hardest parts, like sprints.

Q: Do you have any other hobbies?

A: Watch TV and hang out at the Hammond Hill pool.

Q: How do you train outside of the Hammond Hill swim team?

A: With ASL (Aiken-Augusta Swim League) at USCA.

Q: What are your goals this year?

A: To beat all my records.

Q: What are your strengths?

A: Starts, turns and finishes. And being competitive.

Q: What are your weaknesses?

A: Kicking strength.

Q: Do you play any other sports?

A: I played basketball for one year, two years ago. I stopped because I enjoy swimming more.

Q: What has been your favorite moment?

A: Breaking relay team records. (Recently broke a 1988 record in the individual medley with a time of 2:08.55, and a free-style record)

Q: What has been your toughest moment?

A: The bucket turn and being able to know where the wall is to put your hand.

Q: Who is your inspiration?

A: Daddy and Coach Gary (Mauks). They correct what I do.

Q: Do you have any pre-meet rituals?

A: The whole team does a cheer.

Q: What do you want to do after high school?

A: I don't know.

Q: What is the most important thing you've learned playing sports?

A: To try my best, discipline and hard work.
