Children celebrate the start of summer break with wet fun

Posted June 9, 2009 1:28 PM

A little bit of baby oil, plastic banners rolled on the grass with a pool at the end created lines of children waiting for their chance to slip-n-slide at Riverview Park's Splash Day on Friday.

The chance of rain didn't damper the crowds, but Mendy Toole, the program coordinator for the North Augusta Department of Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services, said they would have held the event anyway.

After all, a little extra water would've been considered free fun.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety fire truck water hose was used as a giant sprinkler splashing children that ran through it.

The ground became so wet that it became a small pool of water that young children kickedin the air and used for water fights.

"There is no sprinkler out here so (the ground) soaks it up pretty good," Toole said.

She said that after each event there's always a healthy green spot of grass growing in the field.

Julia Smith, 10, came out to the event for the first time after a friend told her how much fun it was the previous year.

The Hammond Hill Elementary School pupil enjoyed a soda, chips and a Popsicle, as well as the fire truck.

"I've been having a lot of fun," Julia said.

To control people taking excessive quantities of food they stamped people's hands to make sure there was more food to go around than last year, said Toole about changes to this year's program.

Toole said the event is a way for the park to do something for the children of North Augusta.
