Mayor Lark Jones has served North Augusta for 12 years, and now his seat, along with three city council positions, will be open during the 2009 municipal election in April.

City council members Pat Carpenter, Arthur Shealy and Jason Whinghter's four-year terms will end. Jones said Monday he will run for re-election.

Anyone interested in applying for either mayor or city council can apply until noon Monday with a party official.

Those who are not Democrats or Republicans can start a petition and file independently, said John Younginer, the chairman of the municipal election commission.

"Any qualifying voter is eligible to run for any office," Younginer said.

Primary elections will be held Feb. 10, and a runoff, if needed, will be held Feb. 24.

Conventions, if selected by a party, will be held by Feb. 10, according to the city.

The deadline to file nominating petitions to the municipal election commission will be at noon Feb. 12. A petition can be filed with at least five percent of qualified electors, according to the city.

Candidates selected by primary or convention must be certified by their parties to the municipal election commission by noon Feb. 27. The election commission will have to certify all candidates by noon March 2.

The general election will be held April 28.
