North Augusta Steve & Barry's to close

The North Augusta location began liquidation on Saturday, according to store manager Melanie Goodahl.

Although no actual close date has been posted, the store could close as early as the end of September or as late as January.

No reason was given for why the North Augusta location was chosen, Goodahl said, but employees speculate it was because the location was low volume.

Other locations closing include Camden, Sumter and Rock Hill. The Columbia Place location will stay open.

Steve & Barry's was recently purchased out of bankruptcy by BH S&B Holdings, a newly formed affiliate of investment firms Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management. The chain will close over 100 stores, with about 170 remaining open nationwide.

Formed in Philadelphia on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in 1985, the store originally sold collegiate apparel at prices that undercut the campus bookstore.

Though it originally focused on college clothing, the store now bills itself as making "lifestyle" casual clothing for families. Chinos, hoodies, T-shirts and even neckties filled the 122,000-square-foot store's shelves.

The North Augusta Steve & Barry's is located at
179 Edgewood Square.

It is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
