General news

- Collect box tops, Campbell's soup labels, old ink cartridges, etc. for schools during the summer.

- South Carolina Student Loan awards a $1,000 scholarship monthly. Juniors and seniors are eligible to register for the random drawing.

- Firefighter certification programs will be available in the fall at Augusta Technical College. Contact the college for more information at (706) 771-4000.

- The Hammond Hills Club will be open until Sept. 21. Membership information is available through Sheila West, (803) 279-1963.

- Area II middle and elementary school registration is Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m., and Aug. 6 from noon to 7 p.m. To register, bring a birth certificate, South Carolina immunization records, Social Security card and proof of residency. North Augusta High registration is Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. Make-up registration will be Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

- Aiken County schools begin class Aug. 18.

- Edgefield County schools begin class Aug. 19. Registration: Merriwether Middle is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday for seventh-eighth grades; and Fox Creek High is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9. Open house for Merriwether Elementary kindergarten is 8:30 a.m., and from 9 a.m. to noon first-fifth grades Aug. 15. Instructional fees are $25.

Fox Creek High

- A pre-bid meeting with David H. Wulff Architect Inc. will be held at 10 a.m. at the school Aug. 7. Bid date is Aug. 28. The new school will be located on Shortcut Road in Edgefield County.

- The school is selling personalized, engraved commemorative bricks for $100 each. Proceeds benefit the new school building. Applications are available online at www.foxcreekhs.org.

Paul Knox Middle

- Registration fees for the 2008-09 year are $45. Additional fees are: band, $6, and GT, $10.

- The PTA will be selling T-shirts at registration, Tuesday- Aug. 6, and collecting membership dues.
