State asks residents to conserve water

Gov. Mark Sanford is urging South Carolina residents to conserve water so that water restrictions don't become mandatory.

Officials say a drought gripping the state continues to worsen. The Department of Natural Resources says the worst conditions are Upstate, where some wells have gone dry, and Hartwell and Thurmond lakes along the Georgia line are 10 feet below where they should be.

A special drought committee will meet next month and could suggest mandatory water restrictions for nonessential activities such as washing cars, watering lawns and filling pools.

Help sought to find car that killed cyclist

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is seeking information about a hit-and-run that killed a 42-year-old Beech Island man on his bicycle this month.

Lance Cpl. Trevor Clinton said investigators are searching for a mid-1990s Saturn S-Series car that is green with gold pinstripes and might have damage on the right front or right side.

Noel E. Barrett was hit from behind, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said. The crash occurred just after midnight July 15 on Urquhart Drive seven miles south of North Augusta.

Witnesses should call (803) 641-7657 or (800) 768-1507.
