Fresh floral arrangements welcomed more than 100 attendees for the first Women in Business luncheon at the North Augusta Community Center.

The Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce began the series July 9 with speaker Mary Liz Nolan, of Beasley Broadcasting.

"I think it was wonderful," said Judy Whaley, the chamber's membership service director, about the first session. "It's more than we ever expected."

Women munched on fresh fruit and chicken salad on croissants as they listened to Nolan's career highs and lows.

The mother of two teenagers, Nolan targeted working mothers with a message that going to work every day can be enjoyable. Several times in her career, Nolan brought along the children in their sleeping bags to make sure they were cared for and that she met her 5 a.m. start to get a radio show on the air.

After her husband's battle with colon cancer 10 years ago, Nolan said it was a wake-up call to take care of herself.

Women also got a chance to show off their businesses with booths at the event.

Even women who don't own businesses attended the event, Whaley said, to join in the fellowship of other women.

The next session in October will focus on breast cancer awareness. Whaley said she anticipates a larger crowd.

Tickets for the Oct. 8 luncheon are $20 and or $150 for a table of eight. Call (803) 279-2323 for more information.
