Letter to the Editor: Summer enrichment program continues youngsters' learning

Posted July 15, 2008 2:16 PM

This summer, more than 50 pupils from the North Augusta community are gaining insight on finances, public speaking and research during the Summer Enrichment Program, sponsored by the Summerhill Community Resource Center.

Since the beginning of the program, the students have participated in an "on-location" scavenger hunt, traveled to Fort Discovery, journeyed to Biddle Museum and Bettis Academy Library, received lessons on etiquette, and gained hands-on experience in financial planning and management through the partnership with SRP Federal Credit Union.

In addition, the students have made several trips to Nancy Carson Library to listen to guest authors and received beginner instructions on golfing at First Tee.

The students receive academic instructions during the morning and have free exploration of arts and crafts, music/dance, team-building and storytime in the afternoon.

Additionally, they are receiving life lessons by participating in the debate and fashion show.

We want these students to leave here equipped with academic knowledge but, more important, with the understanding that attitude is an essential component of their success.

For example, the fashion shows let students showcase the latest fashions and learn more about fashion etiquette and how to dress for professional experiences.

Students also completed job shadowing experiences and gained information from area professionals at a career fair.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in a program that affords students the opportunity to grow and learn.
