Steel tips will take more chunks out of the bull's-eyes at The Highlander in a few weeks as the Savannah River Dart Association begins another season.

The group will hold sign-up July 21 for the 12-week season.

The group began at The Highlander pub on Georgia Avenue in North Augusta when owners David and Ian Drakeley founded the league in 1982. Since then, during dart seasons, teams of every skill level enjoy fellowship while trying to improve their aim.

"When I first started, I was doing good to hit the board," said Bobbi Claxton, the association president. "After three or four weeks, I could hit the board regularly."

After sign-up, the group offers Darts 101 to teach new members about the three games played, which includes Cricket and 501.

"Everyone's so helpful," Claxton said. "They'll tell you how to stand, and it's not in a condescending manner; they genuinely want you to get better. There is a huge sense of camaraderie."

Claxton said the beauty of the game is that there are no limitations based on size or ability.

"Like any sport, you'll get better the more you play," she said.

The only limitation is age. Players must be at least 21 because bars and pubs sponsor the league.

League play begins July 28. Sign-up is $20 for 12 weeks.
