Junior golfer takes second place in group's annual championship

North Augusta junior golfer Matthew NeSmith finished second in the boys 13-14-year-old division of the 50th annual South Carolina Junior Golf Association Championship at the Lexington Country Club in Lexington.

With rounds of 71-71-78, Matthew finished in 12th place overall among 136 junior golfers.

NeSmith was also one of four area junior golfers with top 10 finishes after the 12th annual Jimmy Self Junior Festival of Flowers Tournament held at Greenwood Country Club. With a two-day score of even-par 144 (71-73), Matthew finished ninth in a field of 63 golfers, and was the youngest of the top 10 player in the boys field of 13-18-year-olds. Golfers were admitted into the tournament based on the strength of both golf and academic resumes. The top 10 finishes in this tournament were invited back to Greenwood to play in the 2008 Festival of Flowers Golf Classic.
