Some North Augusta residents say the city needs a dog park.
A petition, originated by Barry Myers, is circulating for signatures from other city residents who also would enjoy an off-leash area for their canine friends.
Myers said he occasionally drives to Charleston, S.C., so that his two dogs, Zoe and Sam, can enjoy running freely and playing with other dogs. James Island State Park in Charleston has one of his favorite dog parks, and he said to build a replica does not require much.
"You need probably at least two to three acres," he said.
A park would require at least a 4-foot-tall chain-link fence and bags for owners to use in picking up after their pets. Grass and a water source would be useful, he said, but not necessary.
"Dog owners have to police themselves," Myers said. "If their dog doesn't behave, they can't come. Owners have to clean up after their dogs."
Myers has taken the issue to city officials, who said they will consider his request.
"That's really a decision for city council," said Sam Bennett, the city administrator. "If it is something they want to pursue, we'll make it happen."
Bob Brooks, the director of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, said a dog park is not a high priority.
Myers has proposed using property below the new Municipal Center or an undeveloped area off from the Greeneway near Riverview Park.
"I don't care where they put it, but those are two possible areas," he said.
Myers said he has fewer than 100 signatures at this point.

Where do I sign?
It is absurd that an affluent area does not have a dog park as an amenity. I emailed Mr. Brooks and he wrote back that N. Aug. needs more "people parks" rather than dog parks. I laughed. What?! Does he think that the dogs are going to drive themselves to the dogpark?! A dogpark is a people park! I've used dogparks all over the country for the past 12+ years and enjoy the ability to exercise my dogs at the same time as meeting new people and making new friends. Mr. Brooks needs to get with the 1990's before we're 20 years behind the times!
