Children fishing for whistles out of jars of "gator snot" and youth leaders shooting toilet paper across a room aren't typical church behavior.
Things got a little messy Friday for hundreds of youngsters during Kidz Blitz Live!, a Nickelodeon-style Christian game show at First Baptist Church of North Augusta.
While the crowd enjoyed stunts such as children hula-hooping while eating a doughnut off a chain, or children jump-roping blindfolded while wearing flippers, the kids also received biblical lessons.
Between each stunt, Donnie Slade, the host of Kidz Blitz, had children repeat after him a religious lesson that was associated with each game.
Paul Fowler, 10, set a new record in the jump-roping activity. While wearing a big hat, safety glasses and flippers, Paul had to complete a jump without any items falling to the ground. If something fell, he had to put the item back on before continuing.
The old record was 27 jumps, Slade said, but Paul ripped off 36 in about two minutes before the timer stopped.
The lesson with the jump-roping game was that God will pick us up when we fall, Slade said.
To show how God is able to make sin disappear, Slade placed a bag of grits on the stage, to represent sin, and smashed it with a large hammer, which represented God. Savannah Padgett, 5, said that was her favorite part of the show.
"It got all over the floor," she said. "I learned about God (and) that if you sin you get separated from God."
To end the show, youth leaders shot toilet paper into the air with converted leaf blowers. Parents and children in two teams had to gather the loose paper and wrap a child in it. The lesson -- "My faith in God wraps around my whole life, everything I am and everything I do," Slade said.
