Inspiring ballet is based on woman's suffering in war

Posted February 19, 2008 1:33 PM

A Christian-based ballet company from Mississippi will perform Monday in a show inspired by a Dutch woman who helped Jews escape Nazis during World War II.

The Ballet Magnificat! Omega Company will present Hiding Place , based on the life of Corrie ten Boom. The performance will be from 7-9 p.m. in the Wesley Center at Grace United Methodist Church, 639 Georgia Ave.

Ten Boom and her family provided shelter to Jewish families and members of the Dutch underground. In 1944, the family was arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Many of ten Boom's family members died in Nazi prison camps, but she survived to tell her story in the book The Hiding Place.

"It is about how she maintained hope in the midst of all of her suffering," said Marianne Harlan, the director of worship arts at Grace United Methodist.

A video of a previous performance is available at www.youtube.com by searching for "Ballet Magnificat!"

"Toward the end you can see the freedom that comes about in their hope and their faith in God," Harlan said. "I would imagine that since we all go through suffering at some point in our life that it really will serve as an example to us to keep faith and hope."

The subject matter is very intense, and people can watch the trailer to see whether they think it is appropriate for their children, Harlan said.

Admission to the event is free, but donations will be collected.
