Club's donation helps public safety building

During a recent study session, the North Augusta City Council agreed to accept a $53,000 donation from the North Augusta Sertoma Club to expand the dining room of the city's Department of Public Safety hut.

Since a fire destroyed the North Augusta Golf and Country Club clubhouse in April, the Sertoma Club has met at the public safety hut on Buena Vista Avenue.

Though the group will have no guaranteed privileges to use the hut, they hope the expansion will earn them special consideration, said public safety Chief Lee Wetherington.

However, "the club understands they have no rights to it," Wetherington said.

Early plans for the hut call for adding 30 feet to the rear of the facility.

The council agreed to accept the donation and expand the hut.

New development approved by council

The North August City Council gave tentative approval for the development of nearly 18 acres on West Martintown Road near Interstate 20 off Frontage Road during a Nov. 5 meeting.

The general development plan calls for 10 new buildings constructed in four phases, along with an existing medical office, according to city records. Prospective businesses for the complex include a hotel, restaurant, retail stores and professional offices.

Initially, council members expressed traffic concerns because the entrance to the complex is near an I-20 exit ramp.

However, Skip Grkovic, North Augusta's director of economic and community development, said the property owners will have to mitigate traffic generated by the development before additional phases of the plan will be approved.
