Mentors needed for Mossy Creek Turtles

Mossy Creek Elementary School is looking for a few good men to adopt some turtles. The school started a mentoring program this year intended to pair male community members with at-risk boys in the third, fourth and fifth grades.

Shani Jones, 4, has a curable form of leukemia but it will take a lot of blood to cure her. Emily Zimmerman, 16, of Aiken, has recurring brain tumors that have left her permanently blind. Both girls will benefit from a Fall Festival that will be held at The Hippodrome this weekend.

Gardner's Landing still missing final approval from residents

Despite RiverNorth residents attempt to delay a second reading of the Gardner's Landing development, the ordinance passed 5-2 at city council Monday. In opposition of the ordinance were councilman Ken McDowell and councilwoman Carolyn Baggott.

Some families may have a hard time this year putting presents under the tree because of the sluggish economy. A few organizations are willing to help make Christmas a little brighter for those families.

Math and social studies were Nakema Charles' worst subjects. "They are my best subjects now," she said. "Now the worst is science." The 10-year-old credits her better understanding of the subjects to a team of volunteers from Fairview Presbyterian Church.

Aiken County native Sandy Haskell, who won the county council District 5 seat by a landslide in the Nov. 3 race, was sworn in as a county council member Tuesday. Haskell won the race to fill the District 5 seat once held by Eddie Butler.

NASH BASH 2009, a reunion of the North Augusta Senior High Classes of 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1985, will be held Friday, Nov. 27 from 7 p.m. until midnight at Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Martinez.
