North Augusta City Council-man Jason Whinghter has announced he will challenge state Sen. Greg Ryberg for his District 24 seat. Whinghter, 31, filed his paperwork Saturday and will face off with Ryberg in the June 10 Republican primary.

The municipal building on Georgia Avenue in North Augusta begins to take shape. Last week's construction added rafters to the building. When completed, the building will house city offices.

North Augusta City Council listened to the pleas of River North residents last week and denied a request by developers to build apartments along the Savannah River.

North Augusta officials showed their appreciation to dozens of workers building the palatial municipal center Wednesday with a "topping-off" celebration and barbecue lunch.

Construction crews work on the steel frame of the new North Augusta Municipal Building. The city is planning a "topping off" ceremony at 11:30 a.m. today to celebrate the placement of the highest piece of the building's structure. The event will feature a barbecue lunch.

The turnout is expected to be high when North Augusta Republicans go to the polls Saturday to help choose their party's presidential nominee.

North Augusta City Council agreed to the terms of a bank loan to fund a portion of the new municipal center and also approved the city's new development code Dec. 18.
