Forum for Aiken County Council seat Monday

A forum featuring candidates for Aiken County Council chairman will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the North Augusta Community Center, 495 Brookside Ave.

District 7 County Councilman Andrew Siders, District 4 Councilman Chuck Smith and former Councilman Gary Bunker are seeking the office, vacated when Ronnie Young won the state House District 84 seat vacated by Chris Corley.

The candidates are all Republicans. An Aug. 22 primary will decide the winner, as no one from another party filed. But if no one gets a majority, the two top-finishers will meet again in a Sept. 5 runoff.

Man arrested for theft of pickup, attempted murder

A man was arrested July 31 after police chased a stolen vehicle in Beech Island.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, deputies began the chase after a vehicle was stolen from Enmark power company on U.S. Highway 78 and S.C. Highway 302.

Cpl. Judd Jones, of the S.C. Highway Patrol, said Brandon Eubanks, 23, was traveling north in the stolen 2015 Ford F-250 pickup when he hit a tree and the vehicle overturned.

Eubanks was taken to Augusta University Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The 17-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Eubanks was charged with two counts of attempted murder, failure to stop for blue lights resulting in great bodily harm, grand larceny and driving under suspension.
