RECing Crew’s Sweet Celebrations fundraiser on April 22

Posted: April 18, 2017 - 10:42pm

Whatever appeals to your sweet tooth is likely to be on the menu at the Sweet Celebrations fundraiser for the RECing Crew.

More than a dozen area bakeries are providing an array of desserts such as peanut butter pie, pound cake, various pastries, petit fours, key lime cake and German chocolate cake for the annual fundraiser, which will begin at 6 p.m., April 22, at the North Augusta Community Center.

This is the biggest fundraiser for the organization, which provides programs for children and adults with special needs, according to Pam Stickler, who founded the organization.

"People who come to this event either have a family member who is part of our organization or they are interested in what we do. They want to see where their money goes," she said.

In addition to the desserts, there will be a silent auction with more than 300 items including an assortment of themed gift baskets. Close to 60 area businesses have donated a variety of gift certificates and merchandise for the auction.

The RECing Crew offers numerous programs for its participants. Among them are dance classes and members of the ballet, modern and tap classes will perform during the fundraiser and five Crew Idol contest participants will also perform.

Funds raised through Sweet Celebrations will go back into providing programs at a reduced cost.

The RECing Crew's calendar runs according to the school year and in the fall the organization will celebrate its 15th season, a feat which amazes Stickler.

"What started as a bowling program to give my son something to do has been growing by leaps and bounds," she said.

Her son, Stephen, is now 37, and not only are there weekly bowling leagues, but there's an art program, dance, adaptive baseball and basketball, social gatherings and outings and more. That one program with a handful of participants has grown to an organization that sees 200 active members participating on a regular basis.

During June, July and August, activities slow down as many families travel, but they will start back on Aug. 26 with a family bowling event at Northside Lanes.

Tickets to Sweet Celebrations are $10 and are available in advance at Jim Bush Florist, Communigraphics, North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, Parks Pharmacy and Impressions of the South or on the organization's website at www.therecingcrew.com.
