It didn’t take long for North Augusta resident Kim Kitts to say yes when she was asked to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Augusta’s third annual Man and Woman of the Year campaign.
“I’ve known some other people who have participated in the program,” said Kitts, a candidate for Woman of the Year. “I think that cancer research is important and this is a great way to raise money for an awesome organization.”
This is the third year for the local campaign, said Kate Sanders, senior campaign manager for the Georgia Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“The idea is that local men and women compete during a 10-week time period and every $1 they raise is one vote to be Man of the Year or Woman of the Year,” she said.
Candidates are chosen by a nominating committee comprised of volunteers and past campaign candidates and winners.
The campaign kicked off Thursday and will end May 30 with a grand finale gala at the Legends Club in Augusta.
Money raised through the campaign will go toward research, advocacy, and patient financial aid and financial services, said Sanders.
The goal for the candidates as a team is $250,000. Kitts’ individual goal is $25,000, but she plans to exceed that, said Kitts.
Each candidate has a fundraising page and tickets purchased for the May gala also go toward the fundraising goal.
Kitts also hopes to raise awareness about the organization. “They do so much in research,” she said. “The research they do for cancer can also benefit a lot of other serious diseases that cripple us.”
There is about $2.5 million in research grants in Georgia, said Sanders.
While Kitts is excited about the campaign, she also hopes that by next year, the mission will be different.
“Their motto is ‘someday is today’ and I agree with that,” said Kitts. “With this campaign, I hope that next year, we’ll be raising money for something else because we would have figured out how to beat cancer.”
