North Augusta teen collects items for surgery patients
Elisabeth Harkins recently collected 150 pounds of items for children and young adults having spinal fusion surgery in Ghana.
As a Cadette in the Girls Scouts, she is working on her Silver Award by raising awareness about scoliosis. She is also a member of Young Friends of FOCOS, a group made up of middle and high school students who organize donation drives to benefit those FOCOS serves.
The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine provides orthopedic and spinal care to communities in Ghana and West Africa.
The collection was sent to FOCOS and counts toward her Silver Award efforts.
Items collected included 300 toothbrushes, 73 pairs of socks, 66 tubes of toothpaste, 102 full-size bars of soap, 172 pencils, 53 notebooks, 54 pens, 92 colored pencils and 55 boxes of crayons.
