Mother to hold awareness event

Carolyn Brame-Bates has organized a CSRA Awareness Event: Helping Families Get Closure for 6 p.m. Saturday at Lions Memorial Field, 619 W. Buena Vista Ave.

The goal of the event is to encourage the community to work together to combat crime and will feature speakers and information on how to report crime and crime prevention.

Brame-Bates’ son, Larry Sanders, was killed during a home invasion on July 10, 2010. The 28-year-old Merriwether man was shot in the chest and killed, according to The Augusta Chronicle archives.

His case remains unsolved.

Museum exhibit honors veterans

The Aiken County Historical Museum’s newest exhibit honors veterans.

According to a news release, the exhibit began as a way to honor three members of the Montford Point Marines of World War II from North Augusta: Theodore R. Britton Jr., Calvin Jones and the late Willine Stewart. The exhibit expanded to include other veterans from Aiken County.

The exhibit will be on display through mid-September. Veterans can bring in items for the exhibit.

A reception honoring the veterans will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum, 433 Newberry Street, Aiken.
