Merriwether to get new bus

The Edgefield County School District received approval last week to purchase a new activity bus that will be used primarily by Merriwether elementary and middle schools starting in August.

The bus will also provide transportation to and from Strom Thurmond High School for students living in the Merriwether area.

Previously, the district provided an express bus that allowed students who paid a fee to board the bus at one location to be transported to Strom Thurmond. However, parents had to make arrangements for the students to be picked up in the afternoon.

With the new bus, students can ride to and from Strom Thurmond at no cost.

“We know that our Merriwether students have a long way to travel to attend Strom Thurmond High School and we feel the pain of the parents having to pay for the gas to make this trip every day,” Dr. Carroll Wates, the district’s school board chairman, said in a news release.

The bus will cost the district about $97,000 and will be able to carry 47 to 66 students, the release stated.

The Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta will have its Birthday Bash with Bluegrass and Blues event July 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the North Augusta Municipal Building, 100 Georgia Ave.

There will be performances by Flo Carter, The Henrys, Ryan Abel, Savannah River Strings and the CSRA Shag Club. Attendees can also vote for their favorite cakes created by local bakers.

Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available at the Arts and Heritage Center, Jim Bush Florist and Parks Pharmacy.
