The first year the RECing Crew organized Sweet Celebrations, executive director Pam Stickler saw a pleasant surprise.
“A line of people was wrapped around the building waiting to get in,” Stickler said of the event, which was held at the Acacia Lodge. “It was so exciting.”
Over the years, participant families, friends, supporters and community members have continued to attend the RECing Crew’s annual fundraiser, which has since moved to North Augusta Community Center.
Last year, it drew a crowd of about 200, said Stickler.
The ninth annual Sweet Celebrations event will be held April 27 from 6-10 p.m. at the North Augusta Community Center.
It will feature desserts from area bakeries and bakers including a variety of cakes and pies such as red velvet cake, peanut butter pie, an orange cake, cupcakes and turtle pie.
“We always have 14 to 16 bakeries,” she said. “It’s really nice because people call us and ask if they can bake for us.”
The organization’s Crew Chorus will start off the entertainment for the evening by singing songs from the 1960s. The chorus will be joined by Elvis, portrayed by Russ Schneider, on their last song. Schneider will then entertain for the remainder of the evening.
A silent auction will include baskets and gift certificates provided by area businesses, artwork created by RECing Crew members, and other items.
“100 percent of the funds collected will go back into the programs,” said Stickler.
The RECing Crew currently has more than 150 members who participate in one or more of its programs. Programs include Alley Cats, T-RecS, ART-Ability Studio, Cruisers and Jazzercise.
“The popularity of our programs is growing and so is the need for funds to off-set those costs,” she said.
