In 2003, an opportunity presented itself to Lynn Ealey for her to achieve a better work-life balance.
That opportunity was to become an entrepreneur.
Ealey founded was what then called Paws-N-Claws as a business to business company.
“We custom labeled treats for small gift shops and souvenir shops,” she said.
They created label treats for places such as the Opryland gift shop, Gatorland, zoos and other businesses.
Ealey then changed the name of the company in 2006 from Paws-N-Claws to Happy Whiskerz Cookie Co.
After Ealey and her husband, Charles, moved to North Augusta in 2008, they decided to close the business.
However, that was not to be the end of the company’s story. Last year, after Charles Ealey retired, they decided to start up the company again, this time with him taking the lead.
The company is an online company and sells treats directly to customers. It offers dog and cat treats and will soon have some pet related home décor and seasonal offerings.
“We don’t make any treats,” said Lynn Ealey. “We deal strictly with commercial bakeries with very stringent requirements about what’s in the treats. Some are sold under their brand name and others are sold as Happy Whiskerz treats.”
The pet treats they sell contain no wheat, corn, soy or added sugar or salt, she said adding that everything they sell is made in the U.S.
A portion of the proceeds that are sold under the Happy Whiskerz brand go to the Happy Whiskerz Rescue Fund.
“One of the things we really want to do in the business is to make the world a better place for people and their pets,” she said. “We’ve expanded that mission to help rescue groups.”
The fund goes to help area rescue groups. The company also features a different rescue group on its Web site each month.
Starting this month, the company is offering a new service to North Augusta residents: pet food delivery.
The delivery service will allow pet owners to purchase what they have been purchasing, or a comparable product, without having to go to the store.
“It’s just one more thing off the to-do list,” she said.
The company is also offering a new brand, FreeHand Dog Food. For every purchase, FreeHand will donate pound for pound to a shelter dog.
