Volunteers needed

Georgia Health Sciences University’s Cancer Center is seeking volunteers.

Day-use passes available

The 2013 passes for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers day-use recreation areas are available.

The pass costs $30 and is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Day-use areas include boat launch ramps, designated swimming beaches and picnic areas. The pass does not cover campground use and fees.

Passes can be purchased at J. Strom Thurmond Lake Visitor Center, 510 Clarks Hill Highway, Clarks Hill; Sportman’s Center in North Augusta; the Augusta Marine in Augusta; and Cliatt’s Crossing in Lincolnton, Ga.

Trip to garden show planned

City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism and Cold Creek Nurseries have scheduled a public day trip to the Southern Home and Garden Show in Charlotte, N.C.

The show is March 2 at the Park Expo and Conference Center. The trip will last from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is open to ages 18 and older. A moderate amount of walking is required.

The cost of the trip is $59 and includes transportation, parking and admission to the show. Attendees must pay for their lunch at the show.

Shero Awards nominations

The Sisters Only Club is accepting nominations for the seventh annual Shero Awards.

The Shero Awards honor women ages 18 and up in the following categories: health and social services, arts, law and government/armed forces, community service, business, faith and spirituality, and education.

Two nominees will be selected for the special categories of 96.3 KISS FM Vision Award and Shero Awards Woman of the Year.

Nominees will be honored at the Shero Awards event March 23 at the Kroc Center.

Organization to hold Prom-A-Palooza

The Sisters Only Club will have a Prom-A-Palooza from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9 at May Park Community Center in Augusta.

The event is for teen girls who would like to attend their school’s prom or ROTC ball and are experiencing a financial hardship, being raised by their grandparents, living in foster care or are recommended by an Independent Living Program.

Store to have career open house

The Fresh Market will have a career open house Feb. 6 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It will be held at Woodside Plantation Country Club, 1000 Woodside Plantation Drive, Aiken.

The store is hiring for a variety of positions. Those interested in attending the open house must apply in advance online at careers.thefreshmarket.com and type 136 in the keyword search.

Bags of Love being collected

The Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce and Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council are collecting Bags of Love for senior citizens in the community.

The bags will be distributed for Valentine’s Day to home-bound seniors.

Suggested items to include in bags are a Valentine’s Day card, soap, toothpaste, band-aids, antiseptic cream, cotton balls, wash cloths, artificial sweetener, magnifying glass, calendars, devotional books, sugar-free candy, eye drops, tissue, books, toothbrush, hand lotion, blankets and stretch gloves.

Bags should be dropped off by 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce, 416 Calhoun Street, Johnston.

Association to host legislative breakfast

The Aiken County Education Association- Retired will play host to a legislative breakfast 8:30 a.m. Feb. 8 for members of the Aiken County Legislative Delegation.

The event will take place at Woodside Plantation Country Club, 1000 Woodside Plantation Drive in Aiken.

Members planning to attend must mail a reservation payment of $10.50 to Sara Rutland, 10 Woodlawn Court, North Augusta, SC 29841 by Monday. Phone reservations will be accepted until 5 p.m. Tuesday at (803) 278-3037.

National Pancake Day to benefit children’s hospital

IHOP will serve free pancakes Tuesday during National Pancake Day in an effort to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Customers are asked to make a donation to the effort. All local donations will benefit the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, formerly Georgia Health Sciences University Children’s Medical Center.

Last year, the fundraiser raised more than $3,200 for the local children’s hospital.

Local participating IHOP restaurants are located at 2525 Washington Road and 3125 Peach Orchard Road in Augusta; 4361 Washington Road in Evans; and 180 Aiken Mall Drive in Aiken.

Nominations sought for board

The Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its board of directors.

The board features 12 positions: two from Johnston, two from Edgefield, one from Trenton, one from Merriwether and six at-large positions. Only four of these positions are filled.

Responsibilities included attending monthly board meetings and chamber events.
