Girl Scout cookies go on sale Friday

Area Girl Scout troops will begin selling Girl Scout cookies door-to-door Friday.

The door-to-door sales continue through Jan. 27. Cookie sales at area retail locations will be held on weekends from Feb. 22 through March 17.

Each box costs $3.50 and the proceeds help underwrite troop activities and expenses, girl programming, camperships, membership assistance, program development, training opportunities and property improvements.

A new tropical flavoried cookie, Mango Crème, is being introduced. Other available flavors are Carmel deLites, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Pattie, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread, Thanks-A-Lot and Thin Mints.

Student receives pilot’s license

Travis L. Pickens of North Augusta was certified as a private pilot Nov. 30 at Middle Georgia College.

Pickens, who is a college sophomore, took a four-hour exam with the Federal Aviation Administration that included an oral review and a demonstration of his capabilities as a pilot.

He is studying business management and flight management.

He also plans to receive more flight training to become a commercial pilot.

Pickens is a graduate of North Augusta High School and a member of Hammond Grove Word Power Ministry. His parents are Derrick and Denise Pickens. Grandpar­ents are Robert L. Bigham Sr., Rosa Bigham and Lillian J. Hardy.

Free income tax help available

AARP Tax-Aide is offering free tax preparation for low- and middle-income taxpayers from Jan. 28 through April 12.

The service is for Aiken County residents, with “special attention to those ages 60 and older,” according to a news release.

Volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service will prepare and electronically file tax returns from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays at the Nancy Carson Library, 135 Edgefield Road.

The service is also being offered at the Aiken County Public Library, 314 Chesterfield Street in Aiken, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Bring picture ID, Social Security cards for the person filing and all dependents, copies of 2011 federal and state tax returns, current year W-2 forms, 1099 forms and other relevant materials needed to prepare 2012 returns.
