General news

• The Area II spelling bee will be held Jan. 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the North Augusta High School auditorium.

• An informational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 for North Augusta area schools at North Augusta Elementary School. The speaker, Dr. Alex Mabe, will discuss key challenges for children with ADHD/ADD and their families and ways everyone can work together.

Belvedere Elementary

• Chick-fil-A biscuits will be sold Jan. 11.

• Tryouts will be held Jan. 16 for the North Augusta Idol. Pupils must get a permission slip from Mrs. Radford or Mrs. Hargrove and return it signed to get a tryout time.

• Chick-fil-A 2013 calendars are being sold for $6.

Fox Creek High

• The Miss Fox Creek 2013 pageant will be held Jan. 26. The theme is Up-town Girl and the competition includes on-stage interviews, sportswear and evening gown. See Mrs. Leopard for more information.

• A free FAFSA workshop will be held Feb. 23 at Aiken Technical College from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hammond Hill Elementary

• Winter recess continues through Friday. Classes resume Monday.

• Spirit Day will be Jan. 11. Wear your school shirt.

• The end of the first semester is Jan. 15.

• Jan. 18 is a teacher work day. There will be no school for pupils.

• The Martin Luther King Holiday will be observed Jan. 21. There will be no school.

Merriwether Elementary

• The Looney Tunes Bank is open at 9 a.m. Wednesdays in the media center.

• The MES Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club meets on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

• Christmas break continues through Friday.

• Monday is a teacher workday. There will be no school for pupils.

• Classes resume Tuesday.

Merriwether Middle

• Christmas break continues through Friday.

• Monday is a teacher workday. There will be no school for pupils.

• The third nine weeks begin Jan. 17.

• The Martin Luther King Holiday will be observed Jan. 21.

• Report cards will be available Jan. 28.

Mossy Creek Elementary

• Winter break continues through Friday. Pupils return Monday.

• Pupils can request to meet with Bridge Builders and Ms. Hooper to work out a conflict. Bridge Builders are fifth-grade pupils who are trained peer mediators. The “Fix It” sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 7:20 to 7:45 a.m.

North Augusta Elementary

• The School Improvement Council meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday.

• The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest each year for students in third through 12th grades. The winner will receive $20, second place gets $15 and third place $10. The winners will receive their awards and read their essays during the auxiliary’s monthly meeting March 4. The first-place winners’ essay will then be submitted to the state contest. Those interested in participating must write their essays at home and submit them to Mrs. Reese by Jan. 11. The essay theme is ‘‘What freedom do I enjoy the most?’’ Third- and fourth-grade participants should write 150-250 words. Fifth-grade participants should write 250-300 words.

North Augusta High

• A Financial Workshop 101 for parents of seniors will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15 in the auditorium. To reserve your seat, visit www.cfcsc.com or (803) 798-0390.

• The school has received a $1,500 grant from the Kimberly Clark Foundation to buy instruments for the band program.

• Chick-fil-A cookies will be sold for $1.25 during lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sandwiches will be sold for $4 on Fridays.

• The NJROTC canteen is open during all three lunches. Items sold include chips, cookies, crackers, candy and drinks.

• The Jacket Espresso is open during all three lunches and sells coffee, hot chocolate, fruit smoothies and iced mocha lattes.

North Augusta Middle

Our Lady of Peace

• The school will be closed through Sunday. No before- or after-care will be provided during this time. Classes resume Monday.

• The Mardi Gras Silent Auction will be held March 2. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased from the school office or any OLP school family.

Paul Knox Middle

• Christmas break continues through Friday.

• Beginning Monday, student messages will be delivered at 1:45 p.m. All messages must be called in by 1:30 p.m. Pupils cannot leave school early unless they are signed out by a parent, guardian or their designee. Pupils who miss at least four periods will be counted absent for the day. Pupils who have an appointment scheduled should bring an excuse, have it approved in the office, show it to the teacher at the beginning of class and leave quietly at the necessary time without disturbing class.

Victory Christian

• Chapel is held at 11 a.m. Thurs­days in the Victory Baptist College’s main classroom, located on the second floor of the school building.

• High school midterms will be Jan. 10-11.
