An old man stood on his front porch
And watched his young son leave
He had given to him his inheritance
Now how his heart did grieve
And he told him son be careful
It’s a cold cold world out there
Don’t fall in with the wrong crowd
And I’ll keep you in my prayers
And the young man smiled, thought to himself
What does that old man know?
Cause he’s been here such a long long time
And he don’t know where I’ll go
And then he heard his father say
Don’t forget your way back home my son
I have loved you from the beginning
And you’re always welcome home
And now the story moves further
In a pig pen there’s our friend
He had spent his very last dollar
And he’d sunk so deep in sin
Then he heard his father’s voice ring out
Don’t forget your way back home now son
For I love you with all my heart
And you’re always welcome home
So he headed back and he reached the place
He could see his father’s home
And there hung on the gate a sign
My son you’re welcome home
And so Dear Lord I pray that you
Will forgive me of my sins
For you are my Heavenly Father
