Well, fall is here, and with it comes new and exciting art events in our area and at the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta.
In addition to the Clay Artists of the Southeast and the exhibit by the North Augusta Artists Guild, we have the Westobou Festival in Augusta and North Augusta at the Arts and Heritage Center.
The Westobou Festival is a celebration of both visual and performing arts. The festival puts a spotlight on the Central Savannah River Area with a celebration on national and international talent in music, words, dance and film Oct. 3 through Friday.
This year, the Arts and Heritage Center will once again play an important role by exhibiting the works of internationally recognized artists Karen Beall and Claire Ellen Corey. Both are mixed-media artists. Beall creates whimsical and dream-like pieces that possess organic yet elegant qualities, while Corey uses digital scans combined with paint creating abstract images that portray ‘‘illusion and reality,” according to Corey.
The Arts and Heritage Center visual art exhibit will be open every day of the festival. There will be a reception for the Westobou exhibits and the 10th anniversary of the founding of the North Augusta Artists Guild on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. The public is invited to the reception.
The Arts and Heritage Center will host the 2012 Augusta Photo Festival Competition Finalist exhibition from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4. The capstone event of the 10-day photography festival will be the awards ceremony at the AHC on Nov. 4 from 3 to 4 p.m.
The exhibit will feature 60 finalists selected from 750 entries. Categories are: people, places, nature, abstracts, historic America and altered images. Awards will be presented in first through third place in each category, along with additional cash awards for People’s Choice and Best of Show.
To top off the end of the month, the AHC will have the Spooky Sprint 2012 fundraiser Oct. 27 with a start time of 9 a.m. on the Greeneway Trail at Center Street. Registration forms are online at active.com or artsandheritagecenter.com and Fleet Feet sports (Fury Ferry Station). Cost is $25 adults and $15 students before Oct. 20, or $30 per person after Oct. 20. Registration includes a T-shirt and digital running bib, but T-shirts cannot be guaranteed for late registration.
