Deputy gets DUI
An Aiken County deputy was fired June 20 after being arrested for drunken driving early that morning in Wagener, Aiken County Sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell said.
Sheriff’s deputy Scott Baynham, of North Augusta, was pulled over for speeding on Gunter Street about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, said Wagener police Chief Jeff Key. After failing a field sobriety test, Baynham was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.
Baynham was off-duty and driving his personal vehicle, Key said.
Elwell said Baynham was a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s office with no prior disciplinary issues.
Man found hanged
A 43-year-old Augusta man was found hanged between 3 and 4 a.m. June 18 at the dead end of River Oak Drive along the North Augusta Greeneway, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday morning.
Chief Deputy Coroner Darryl Ables said the death is considered a suicide. Ables identified the man as Leroy Chapman.
North Augusta Public Safety is asking for assistance in finding a van that could be connected with a burglary at Northside Lanes on Thursday.
According to an incident report, the manager of the business at 1745 Georgia Ave. discovered that the compressor and copper had been removed from an air conditioning unit.
Surveillance video showed a white van near the air conditioning unit about 1:30 a.m.
