Savannah River Winds will perform

Posted: May 22, 2012 - 11:13pm  |  Updated: May 30, 2012 - 4:22pm

Music in the Park will feature Savannah River Winds at 7 p.m. Thursday at Maude Edenfield Park.

The program will include highlights from West Side Story and a piece called Dakota composed by Jacob de Haan, according to band director Richard Brasco.

“De Haan is a composer from the Netherlands who has become interested in the folklore of the USA.

He has composed pieces for the states of Oregon and Virginia,” Brasco said. “Dakota is a piece that he wrote, and it deals with the Dakota Indians of the Western plains, and of the calvary who were killed by them at Wounded Knee.”

Brasco said they will also perform Italian Rhapsody, a mix of Italian street songs and themes from Puccini operas.

He said the highlight will be featured vocalist Flo Carter, from Beech Island, who is an accomplished jazz singer.

She will sing three Gershwin tunes- They Can't Take That Away from Me, But Not for Me and Summertime.
