Teen armed with machete during robbery

A 15-year-old was arrested after an armed robbery at a North Augusta gas station Friday morning.

According to a North Augusta Public Safety incident report, officers were called to assist the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office after the robbery at Greg’s Gas Plus, 6043 Jefferson Davis Highway, shortly after 1 a.m.

Police said a young man entered the store armed with a machete and demanded money. After the clerk put money into a black bookbag, the boy fled on foot into the woods toward Willow Wick Apartments.

Authorities later located the teen in an apartment with his father. The suspect was sweating profusely and had grass stains on his clothes. Police said he insisted that he had been asleep until recently when he got up to smoke.

After getting consent from his father, officers searched the boy’s room, where they located the bookbag and a wet hoodie matching the suspect’s clothing description. The father turned over a shoebox under the bed with $99 that he told officers did not belong to him or his son.

The teen, who has not been identified, was taken into police custody.
