Catherine Powell spent the summer preparing for this year’s Future City Competition where her North Augusta Middle School team, Nova Vida, placed third in the state.
The future city they created was made out of recycled objects such as Coke bottles and Play-Doh containers. Catherine said they worked on the project for six months.
She also is a member of the Beta Club, where she said she enjoys working with and meeting different people. Recently they’ve been working to put together goodies for the teachers to enjoy over spring break.
The eighth grader has also played the clarinet in the school band for three years.
History is her favorite subject to learn.
“It’s life,” she said. “It’s the past, future and present because history is always repeated.”
Since she likes classes where she can just learn facts, she said Algebra I is her least favorite class.
“You have to think during that subject,” she said.
Catherine said she is looking forward to high school next year. She will be part of the first class in the Freshman Academy. Though she doesn’t like the aspect of being sheltered from other students since she likes meeting new people, she said she is still excited to be able to take a variety of classes.
“I’m excited about classes. There are better choices,” she said. “I am excited about world history and U.S. history.”
Outside of school, Catherine volunteers at Golden Harvest Food Bank and the Ronald McDonald House. She also enjoys reading.
“I really like J.R.R. Tolkien, it’s different,” she said, adding that his work makes one think.
She said she’ll most likely attend Clemson University as others have done in her family, and that she wants to have a career as a medical examiner.
