The North Augusta Optimist Club recently held its annual awards banquet to honor the winners of its annual essay contest. This year's topic was How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community. • The following North Augustans were awarded University of South Carolina Aiken engineering scholarships on Friday from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions: Timothy Boerste, Morgan Enlow and Stetson Turner. They were among eight students who received engineering scholarships. SRNS presented $50,000 to USC Aiken to fund the scholarships.

• The 2012 Yellow Jacket Open Golf Tournament, hosted by the North Augusta Yellow Jacket Club, will be held March 2 at Midland Valley Country Club. Registration and lunch will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per player or $225 per team. Entry forms are available at CommuniGraphics, Midland Valley Country Club or online at www.northaugustayellowjacketclub.shutterfly.com. Deadline to register is Feb. 28. Entry forms can be mailed to North Augusta Yellow Jacket Club, P.O. • The following made the 100 Book Club: Christopher Chavous, Sanja Becnel, Amanda Crespin, Nolan Wilson, Kennedy Brown, Brooke Smith, Tri-Myiah Stokes, Kaytlen Wiggins, Jazmin DeRiggs and Caleb Golden.

• Domino's Spirit Night is Thursday.

• Write Night/Literacy will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13. The theme is “Reading and Writing Is in Our Hearts.” Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold for $1.

• The Miss FCHS pageant will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Wesley Center at Grace United Methodist Church.

 

• The school has been nominated by South Carolina for the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools award because of outstanding results for all students, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. The school is one of five to be nominated in the state and the only one from Aiken County. The 2012 recipients of the award will be announced in the fall.

• Hammond Hill Elementary has been chosen as an honorable mention winner for the 2011-12 Healthy Living Kroger Earning Plus Learning Program and will receive $1,500 from the Kroger Co. Ms. Mauldin and Ms. Mock submitted a video of how the school exhibits healthy living throughout the school year.

• The following pupils have become members of the Double H Reading Club: Noah Beym, Cameron Lowery, Joseph Zellar, Emily Howard, Kinder Alexander, Jessica Barela, Isaiha Blodgett, Stephen Johnston, Jackson Beavers and Kylie Parham. 200 Books: Madeleine Sandoval. 300 Books: Gillian Gregory.

• The Golden Shoe Award is given to classes based on having good sportsmanship and using their life skills in P.E. class. The following classes won the award for the second nine weeks: Ms. Holloway, kindergarten; Ms. Graham, first grade; Mrs. Butler, second grade; Ms. Newman, third grade; Ms. Turner, fourth grade; and Ms. Mock and Ms. Patterson, fifth grade.

• Today is an early release day. Pupils will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

• D.A.R.E. graduation is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Belvedere First Baptist Church. All pupils who are graduating must arrive at the church’s fellowship hall in the back parking lot by 6:45 p.m. Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A will follow the graduation ceremony.

Merriwether Elementary

• After-school tutoring for second through fifth grades has started. All pupils need to reapply if they want to continue in the second session.

• The school is hosting a districtwide sudoku tournament at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 in the school’s cafeteria. The competitors will be pupils in third through fifth grades who placed in the top five at their school. Prizes will be given. Pizza and other snacks will be available for purchase during the tournament.

 

• Pupils will be released at 12:30 p.m. today.

• Pupils are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character for Spirit Day on Feb. 14.

• Jump Rope for Heart will be held Feb. 13-17 during P.E.

• The North Augusta Leadership Pavilion dedication is at 9 a.m. today.

• Pupils will be released at 12:30 p.m. today.

• The school will have International Day on Friday.

• The following made the book club: 100 books: Kinsley Muns, Ava Bai, Jorge Reyes, Jadyn Simpkins, Weston Warren, Trey Armstrong, Kinleigh Widener and Molly Hughes; 200 books: Brayden Rutland and Hudson Rudd; 500 books: Zsa-Kiana Williams; 600 books: Colby Hawes; 700 books: Grady Walker; page master: Taylor Hawes, Chase Chiswell, Matthew McClure and Kristen Wahl; and page master II: Kristen Wahl.

 

• The NAHS Beta Club will hold the Mr. NASH competition at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $5. Proceeds will help a 3-year-old boy with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome to go to Disney World through Make-A-Wish Foundation.

• Yearbook applications are due Friday.

 

North Augusta Middle

 

• The PTO is renting one side of the NAMS sign for $20 a day, 30 words or less. Messages such as birthday announcements can be scrolled on the sign.

 

• The Freshman Academy Expo will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at North Augusta High School. Contact Jenifer Williams at (803) 442-6300 for more information.

• Yearbooks can be paid for by mailing a check to Jostens or visiting www.jostensyearbooks.com. Eighth-grade ads can be purchased. See Mrs. Horne for a form.

• The Black History Month program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22.

• Volunteers are needed for the canteen. Contact Karena Williams at nabeachbums@comcast.net. The PTO canteen is open Mondays and Tuesdays. Snacks are 75 cents each and sodas are $1.25.

• PTO memberships cost $10. There is a reusable coupon sponsored by Monterrey Mexican Restaurant of North Augusta on the back of the membership cards. The reusable coupon allows you to receive $4 off any purchase of $25 or more Sunday through Thursday. The discount is valid through August..

• Tutorial services are available to all pupils from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday: Monday, science; Tuesday, social studies; Wednesday, math; Thursday, English; and Friday, exploratory. The areas will be tested as follows: Monday, exploratory; Tuesday, science; Wednesday, social studies; Thursday, math; and Friday, English.

 

• Friday is homecoming.

• Three-week progress reports will be available Feb. 10.

• There will be no school Feb. 20.

• Re-enrollment begins Feb. 27

• The school collects box tops and used ink cartridges.
