Nature, artists give us plenty of beauty

Posted: December 20, 2011 - 7:21pm  |  Updated: December 27, 2011 - 3:38pm

What a beautiful fall season we have had this year. I think it is the nicest one we have had since I first arrived in the Aiken County area many years ago. It is like Mother Nature picked up her paint brush and painted beautiful scenes throughout the entire Greater North Augusta area.

Many residents have let their artistic side pop up for us all to enjoy with Halloween, Thanksgiving and now Christmas decorations in their yards and homes. It is a joy to drive around and see how much the community joins in for these celebrations. The city and local business have added their beautiful touches for us to see and enjoy as well. Our local businesses put out a great effort to help us enjoy the season so we all need to shop locally and support our community businesses.

The Fall into Art Exhibit and the Palmetto Christmas Exhibit and gift shop have added wonderful art and holiday decoration at the Arts and Heritage Center. The Holiday Open House and the Christmas Tour of Homes brought many people in to see the lovely exhibits and enjoy the hospitality during the event Dec. 2-3. These exhibits will be on display until the end of the month.

If you are like me and feel like, “How did it get to be Christmas already?” then all the lovely decorations around town should help get you in the mood to enjoy this blessed season. This year, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa all take place in the same week.

We will start the new year with two new exhibits at the North Augusta Arts and Heritage Center, 100 Georgia Ave., with the Southern Observatory ladies. This intimate group of artists is drawn together by their passion for visual arts. They work in a variety of media, including painting, ceramics and mixed media. Southern Observatory members are women living in the CSRA.

The theme of their 2012 exhibit is "And she lived” and “And they lived happy ever after.”

We will also get to enjoy the North Augusta Sports Commission's Sports Hall Of Fame in the second-floor balcony gallery. Both exhibits will run from Jan. 10 to Feb. 25. Bring a friend on a Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and visit with the Tuesday Painters and tour the exhibits. A day of art and history always fills the soul with joy.

Remember to check out the Artists of the Month at The North Augusta Family Y, The Beveled Edge Art and Frame Gallery, Jim Bush Flower Shop, the Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, North Augusta Arts and Heritage Center and the Artist Spotlight in North Augusta Today each month.

Happy holidays everyone! Keep art in your life and a smile on your face.
