SC Highway Patrol seeking job applicants

Posted: December 11, 2017 - 5:42pm

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is now accepting applications for new troopers and telecommunications officers.
The agency is scheduled to hold recruitment sessions for their 10 patrol offices, Troops 1 to 7, this week.
Sessions began Monday at their Newberry and Pickens headquarters and continue through Friday at their Lancaster and Aiken headquarters.
Upcoming event locations include:
Troop 1 recruitment at Sumter Patrol Office, 520 South Pike East, in Sumter, and Troop 6 recruitment at Jasper Patrol Office, 470 Live Oak Drive, in Ridgeland on Wednesday
Troop 5 recruitment at Horry Patrol Office, 4195 Hwy. 701 North, in Conway, and Troop 6 recruitment at Charleston Patrol Office at 597 Old Mount Holly Road, Suite 304, in Goose Creek on Thursday
Troop 7 recruitment at Aiken Patrol Office, 802 East Martintown Road, Suite 418, in North Augusta and Troop 4 recruitment at Lancaster Patrol Office, 1710 Pageland Hwy., in Lancaster on Friday.
Lance Corporal Judd Jones said the agency receives a significant number of applications, but applicants typically begin to drop off prior to attending the 12-week academy.
"We get a lot of applicants, but getting qualified is where the difference is," Jones said.
To boost numbers, the agency recently shortened its hiring process and amended its tattoo policy, which now allows visible tattoos under the requirements that they do not contain "any unapproved reference to South Carolina Department of Public Safety or any of its divisions or any political affiliation or message."
"We're continually trying to get new people," Jones said. "We need highly motivated, disciplined individuals who are able to react quickly and think on their feet.
"They also have to look at all aspects of the job. They will probably work weekends and holidays sometimes, so they'll have to weigh all of that in, but it's a good job to have."
During recruitment sessions, interested candidates can submit an application and share their concerns with agency supervisors, Jones said.
"They'll go through each detail, for them to learn the exact steps that they will take and how the process will be from beginning to end," he said.
"They just need to bring themselves, and recruiters will be there with information that they need, and computers will be set up for those who want to start their applications."
