Posted: December 11, 2017 - 5:48pm

Aiken County Public School Board member Wesley Hightower was elected president of the South Carolina School Boards Association during its annual Delegate Assembly.
Hightower, District 3 representative, is the association's first president from the county's school board since 1965, when John McLaurin held the office.
The association serves as an advocacy group for boards governing the state's 81 school districts. The association's annual business meeting, which was held during its Legislative Advocacy Conference, included voting delegates from most of the state's school boards. In addition to the election of association officers, delegates adopted resolutions to guide the association during the 2018 legislative session.
Hightower received a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina Aiken in 1984 and a master of education degree from USC in 1996. He is chair of the USCA Inclusion Advisory Council and served as an adjunct instructor at Aiken Technical College teaching leadership courses for managers of various companies. He was elected to the Aiken County Public School Board in 2006 and co-chairs the board's legislative grassroots advocacy efforts. He also serves in a variety of leadership roles at Savannah River Site.
