The University of South Carolina Aiken has added two new deans who will join the faculty July 1 and Aug. 8: Dr. Mark Hollingsworth, the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr. Daren J. Timmons, the dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, according to a news release from the college.

“Dean Hollingsworth and Dean Timmons were chosen from a pool of extremely qualified candidates, which made the selection by both search committees extremely exciting – and challenging,” said Dr. Jeff Priest, the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. “I’m grateful that so many leaders in their fields truly want to be a part of the amazing progress we’re making at the university.”

He said both deans bring a “wealth of experience” in their fields and in higher education administration to USC Aiken.

“Their efforts to date will certainly benefit our dynamic and diverse student body, which is growing every year.” Priest said.

USC Aiken’s undergraduate enrollment numbers are up almost 4 percent, and graduate enrollment is up almost 54 percent.

“We need the best and the brightest, which includes our current faculty, as well as Deans Timmons and Hollingsworth,” Priest said.

The deans’ positions at USC Aiken are critical to the overall alignment of the academic and administrative structure. They provide leadership and guidance in all aspects of the university, including teaching, research/creative activities, intellectual development, program development, advancement, administrative management, and representation of the university within and outside USC Aiken, according to the release.

Responsibilities include faculty recruitment, development, evaluation and promotion; management of financial, personnel and physical resources; supervision of relevant accreditation processes; cultivation and stewardship of alumni and community relations; collaboration with partners within and outside the university; and securing and facilitating external funding, both public and private.

Timmons is the John C. Allen ’62 Institute Professor of Chemistry and head of the chemistry department at Virginia Military Institute. As dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, he will be responsible for the departments of mathematical sciences (including engineering); psychology; biology and geology; exercise and sports science; chemistry and physics.

Hollingsworth is currently the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at East Central University in Ada, Okla. As dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, he will be responsible for the departments of English; sociology; communications; visual and performing arts; languages, literatures and cultures; history, political science, and philosophy.
