SLED continues to investigate officer involved shooting

Posted: February 11, 2014 - 3:12pm

Authorities have identified the man fatally shot Sunday night after a police chase through two South Carolina counties.

Lt. Tim Thornton, of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, said Earnest Satterwhite Sr., 68, of Rose Drive in Edgefield County, was fatally wounded by a public safety officer after the pursuit.

The chase started about 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Knox Avenue in front of the Shoppes of North Augusta. Public Safety Officer Justin Craven said he tried to stop the vehicle because he suspected the driver might be drinking, Thornton said.

When the driver didn’t stop, Craven pursued the vehicle on Edgefield Road. The chase resulted in damaged mailboxes and two accidents – one near the Papa John’s restaurant on Edgefield Road and the other near the intersection of Edgefield and Ascauga Lake roads, Thornton said.

As the pursuit left Aiken County, North Augusta Public Safety notified the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office that the chase was heading its way.

Edgefield County deputies joined the pursuit just as it ended at Satterwhite’s residence on Rose Road.

As officers approached the vehicle, an altercation ensued and Craven shot Satterwhite.

Edgefield Chief Deputy Coroner David Burnett said Satterwhite died at 10:11 p.m. at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

Thornton said Craven has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
